Ampthill Cinemas

Postby Memory Lane » Wed Jan 02, 2013 3:15 pm

The building in Saunders Piece was built in 1871 as a Primitive Methodist Chapel. In 1920 it became the Electric Cinema then renamed the Kinema which closed when the Zonita Cinema opened.
The other Cinema (Picturedrome?) was nearby - diagonally across from the Ossary front entrance. (Not where the newer block of flats is)
My deceased Father in Law, Herbie Langford was a keen motorcyclist at the time and he owned a big motorbike. He told me that at for a time he provided the power to drive the arc light projector from his motorbike via some sort of contraption rigged to the rear wheel. If only I had a photo !!!

As a picture speaks a thousand words more about Ampthill Cinemas can be found at.
