Battle with Squirrels!

Postby CraftsbyCarolyn » Sun May 02, 2010 5:31 pm

Has anyone managed to outwit these pesky creatures with feeding the birds?

I even had my friends rotweiler chasing him on Thursday and he is back!

I can see that there are feeders caged within a cage - but they are pricey - anyone got one - do the squirrels gnaw through them eventually?

I put a couple of squirrel proof feeders on the Pasque stall last Thursday. They do work as long as they are substantial - which these two are. The squirrels will gnaw through the ordinary plastic feeders

I will have to see if they still have them then!

We've got a pair of squirrel proof feeders that are still intact after several months.

What sort are they - just been looking around on Youtube and there are plenty that do not seem that successful - love this one:

The ones I had are like round heavy wire globes with the seed holder down the middle. About 9" diameter The other is cylindrical shaped

Ground feeders are a problem, but otherwise we manage to beat the squirrels with hanging feeders. Have a look at the RSPB shopping site:

I understand that a liberal application of CAYENNE PEPPER on seeds and NUTS isn't quite to the local squirrels taste and it doesn't overly bother the birds.
My mother has been having a RUNNING BATTLE with one squirrel in her garden for quite some time.
The squirrel is ahead on points after a few rounds. My mother outwits it briefly, but the squirrel tends to figure it all out in the end.

I popped by the stall on Thursday - but they had sold one last week and didn't bring the other this week.

It's becoming the CLASH OF THE TITANS in my mother's garden now.
My father is now getting involved. He has a PLAN.

YOu will have to let me know how the plan goes. The peanuts seem to be lasting in the feeder I have. It has a teracotta top and bottom with a double mesh, but I have placed it elsewhere in the garden - so not sure if he has spotted it yet!

**UPDATE** **UPDATE** **UPDATE**

My mother is having some SUCCESS with a clear bowl type thing** around the lower part of the bird feeding area, high on the pole.
The squirrel goes whizzing up the pole and then PANGS his head on this before belting of in a HUFF.
So I understand.

** The device may not be bowl shaped - could be large and flat like an OUTSIZED plate.
