Bar 4 closed

A CONTROVERSIAL nightclub and restaurant opened in the spot of a former lap-dancing club has closed its doors.

A mysterious note appeared on the door of Ampthill's Number 4, in Church Street, on Sunday explaining that the tenant's lease had run out and they had 'no right to remain in the premises'.

There had been no previous warning the grill restaurant and bar, which was open until 1am as usual on Friday night, was set to close.

The note read: "The lease relating to these premises has come to an end and the Tenant has no right to remain in the premises."

It directs all inquiries to Messrs Stimpsons Eaves, 1 Lurke Street, Bedford - 01234 341311.

One local man, who did not want to be named, said the sudden closure had been 'greeted enthusiastically by most people in the town'.

He added: "It has long been plagued by accusations that the clientelle take drugs, fight and cause a nuisance in the area."

Number 4 replaced Lord Shayler's even more controversial and short-lived strip club, which closed in February 2013 after opening four months earlier.

Hundreds of people, including Mid-Bedfordshire MP Nadine Dorries, protested about the opening of the strip club being out of keeping with the Georgian market town.

Thousands also signed a protest to get rid of it.

Residents in the town have taken to social media to share their views on what they would like to see opened up in Number 4's place.

Debbie Kemp wrote: "Please no more bars, coffee shop or hairdressers please. Got enough of them!!"

Others suggested opening up a children's soft play centre, a pottery/craft cafe or a meze restaurant.

Other ideas included a Thai restaurant or a sports/cycling shop.

Looks like the Tenants hadn't been paying their rent.
It is a pity that such prominent premises in the Town center always seems to end up being a problem.
If the rent is too high then it is going to be difficult to find a tenant who can make the premises pay,
which probably means that the next tenant will have to offer something controversial in order to keep business going.
We wait, yet again, with baited breath :o :o

Bet it will be a café run by someone with appropriate experience from trading in Biggleswade.
